Undercover Martyn

ABOUT

Undercover Martyn was released on their EP, Four Words To Stand On (2008). It was later released as third second single, Undercover Martyn (2010), and features on their first album, Tourist History (2010).  It’s also the source of the basementpeople hash-tag, which is used on twitter, and that inspired our site name (see lyrics).

SONG MEANING

Undercover Martyn tells the story of someone that’s doing something that’s a bit scary, and they’re trying to convince others that it’s the right thing to do. It’s inspired by them taking the leap in to becoming a band after school rather than going to University, and them convincing their family and friends that it’s the right thing to do. ((Source))

SONG LYRICS

And she spoke words that would melt in your hands
And she spoke words of wisdomTo the basement people, to the basement, many surprises await you
In the basement, people, in the basement

You hid there last time, you know we’re gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you’re not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

You hid there last time, you know we’re gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you’re not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

And she spoke words that would melt in your hands
And she spoke words of wisdom

To the basement people, to the basement, many surprises await you
In the basement, people, in the basement

You hid there last time, you know we’re gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you’re not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

You hid there last time, you know we’re gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you’re not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

You hid there last time, you know we’re gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you’re not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

You hid there last time, you know we’re gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you’re not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

I was way off. This song made me think of exotic dancing in the basement of the building. I certainly didn’t picture a child being the one to tell people it was time to move downstairs. I thought of “many surprises” referring to ladies dancing and showing their choach. I put myself in the shoes of the guy who went there with his drinking buddies just to fit in, who tries to sneak out when the time comes without his buddies noticing, because he was grossed out last time when he actually did go to the basement. Unfortunately, a car is not the best place to hide without anybody noticing.
